Should you say ‘Merry Christmas’ to customers at Christmas?

Christmas is one of the most magical times of the year, a time to spread the joy and celebrations… but does everyone share your thoughts?

When wishing clients or customers a Merry Christmas,  you don’t want to offend anyone but at the same time you want to spread some of that much loved Christmas joy that comes with this special time of year!

So what do you do? Well the first thing to do is ….think!

If we take a look at the last few years creating Christmas eCards for businesses in Wishawish an overwhelming 57% of clients chose to go with the ‘season’s greetings’ message rather than ‘Merry Christmas’ or any other variation.

But if you think about it, is Season’s Greetings even that politically correct? Just as there are potentially people of other faiths who might be offended by receiving a Christmas card when they do not celebrate Christmas, so are there Christian people who will be offended by receiving a greeting card which ‘uses’ THEIR holiday. Other people might simply see it as a diluted sentiment, or one which airbrushes its own history,

Other variations you might want to consider is ‘Happy Holidays’ or something more focused on the end of one year and the beginning of another – ‘Happy New Year’ or ‘best wishes for the coming year!’

It’s important to think through your options and what you want to say as a business. Think about your own tone of voice and let that help you. What do you want to project as your business’s ‘personality’?

Another point to consider is your clients. What do you think the majority of your clients want to hear? This can really help steer you in the right direction but even here the best option is not always clear.

And so, ultimately you have to go with what you are most comfortable saying and what you really would like to wish your contacts. All in all think about your business, your tone of voice and how you intereact with your customers.

There is no one perfect way to do this and every choice has potential for people to get upset (even not sending a card at all might upset some people), so if you go with what you are happy with you will also be more comfortable standing behind that choice should you need to.

2. Create inclusion by other means like- a multilingual greeting.

Marketing At Christmas: The single biggest mistake to avoid

One of the buzz lines of marketing is ‘have a strong call to action’.
But when it comes to Christmas – forget it

Sending a Christmas card to your contacts is right on the border between business and personal.You really do not want to come off as someone who is making Christmas all about commerce!

If there is something everyone resents, it is someone using Christmas to promote themselves.

Your eCard is here to act as a breather from commerce, it is here to say- we are thinking of you, and we genuinely would like to wish you well. You are now communicating with your contacts as a friend who wants to wish them well so don’t try and sell anything with your eCard.

By all means have your brand colours all over the card, and web address on the screen for as long as you can (but it should not be bigger than your ‘Hope you have a fantastic year and thank you for being great!’ greeting.) but no calls to action, no ‘click here to get in touch’.

The only exception is if you can HELP your customers. This means making the stress of Christmas shopping easier by offering a discount or a sale or a free gift.

This is so important I want to say it again- No calls for action except an offer.

Interview with WishAwish animator: Fiely Matias

Fiely Matias is one of Wishawish’s ecard animators. In this interview Fiely explains, how his Fiely Matias Animatorpassion for ecards was formed with the creation of the GIFs when the internet first started

Describe your current occupation?

I am currently a freelance graphic animator and freelance actor/director

What do you love most about animation and how did you get involved?

I love drawing and animating because, it’s one of my passions! And when you do your passion all is wishawish animator quotewell with the world! I love it when my art can make someone in the world smile or chuckle. It’s really what it’s all about..making a positive impact in our world no matter how small.

As a child I used to draw by hand. I never thought I was good…and I never had enough patience. I studied journalism and theatre in school and never drew until my thirties. I was in between acting jobs…and I bought a computer. At that time the internet just started and animated gifs were all over the place. I was fascinated with the fact that these small moving images! Most of the gifs were made with very few cels and they just looped. So I started doing research on my own, how these were made. The fact that they were very easy to make fed my interest even more.

I then started downloading free software trial that helped create gifs. Well that was it. After a while…I started drawing my own creations. And since I am competitive by nature…I started entering contests….I lost at first…but then I started winning. What I loved about digital drawing was that it was so much easier to edit and get my vision done. In some ways it was harder…but I was really fascinated by the digital medium. Ultimately I taught myself Flash and 3D animation…which is what my focus is today. The internet was great in that…every tutorial you can think of exists…and it also a great place to showcase your art to the world!

What are some of your favourite projects you’re proud to have been a part of?

For the last few years I have been freelancing for a software company They have a created a system to help teach reading to kids. I love that I am part of such a cool project that helps the future!

How to use Google Trends to help your marketing campaigns

I didn’t intend to write a blog post on Google Trends, initially I was using it myself as a way of collecting data on WishAwish’s own target demographics’ search behaviours. But since Google Trends is a universal tool which anyone can use, I thought a blog post would be a good idea to explain what Google Trends does and how it can help you and your marketing efforts too!

Firstly let me explain what Google Trends is, Google Trends is a clever tool from Google which provides data based on Google Search that shows how often a particular search-term is entered relative to the total search-volume across various regions of the world, and in various languages.

strategy and planningWith this information you can really direct your marketing campaign, whether that’s PPC ads, social media, newsletters, ecards, SEO etc… It’s all about working out when your audience are there and how they are searching. Get it? Let me explain further…

For example, at WishaWish we specialise in customisable corporate Christmas ecards. As you can imagine the majority of our clientele aren’t thinking about their Christmas ecard marketing campaign now in these summer months (ahem… even though a previous blog post explains the benefits of being prepared now). Nevertheless we can use Google Trends to work out exactly when our target audience are starting looking for our services.

Here we have used Google Trends to pull data from the keywords: ‘Christmas Ecards’


No surprise then that there seems to be a pattern every year when people are searching the most for our keywords. But now let’s look closer at the data and see how we get to this peak

As you can see search for the term ‘Christmas Ecards’ actually starts gaining notable volume in October, which continually rises until it hits a peak between December 15th -20th . This is relevant information for WishAWish and our own marketing efforts. We can see that people are looking for our services in October and November so perhaps we send our previous clients a reminder email or ecard, or run a special offer on our social media channels during this time. We know we’re going to be very busy during mid-December, so let’s try and get more clients on board before!

Google trends doesn’t stop there, it can also give you an idea of the different keywords people may be searching with that could help your SEO and Paid Search efforts. For example here are the Google Trends results for ‘Custom Ecards’. Google Trends shows us that ‘Custom Ecards’ also gains higher search volume from October. In fact the term ‘Custom Ecards’ received more search traffic in 2012 than ‘Christmas Ecards’, which is useful information for any paid search ads we may want to run.

Finally Google Trends gives you a list of similar keywords your target demographic may use to search:



Even though Google Trends has suggested words that aren’t relevant to WishAWish such as ‘free Christmas cards’, this data can still be useful. For example if we were to run a Paid Search campaign during November – December we can add words like these, that don’t fit into our business model, to our Negative Keyword lists. Meaning if someone types in Google ‘ Custom Christmas Ecards Free’ they don’t see our ad because we would have listed ‘free’ as a negative keyword.

All in all Google Trends is a handy little tool for finding out when your target audience are searching and what keywords they are using. It is up to you to make the most of this data and alter your marketing campaigns accordingly.
